Bespoke kitchens, wardrobes and bathrooms need coordinated measurements and specifications before manufacture. Storage, appliances and everyday use shape the layout, followed by cabinetry, surfaces, lighting and service interfaces. SMD Decoration offers custom joinery design, kitchen and bathroom fit-out and procurement coordination within a defined scope.

Two quotations can look similar in photographs yet contain different boards, finishes, edges, hardware, worktops and preparation. A useful comparison examines the components and installation as well as the appearance, rather than relying on a product label or a linear-metre rate alone.

Plan the kitchen around real routines

Identify who cooks, which appliances are actually needed, what food and utensils must be stored, and how meals and waste are handled. Test the layout with the refrigerator, dishwasher and drawers open, another person at work and someone using the island seating. Confirm the effect on circulation before adding a seat or island.

Blum’s showroom guidance uses a kitchen mock-up to explore workflow and storage. Adapt that planning idea to the project; it is not a local regulatory requirement.

List appliance model numbers with their installation dimensions, services and ventilation instructions. Coordinate with the supplier before manufacturing openings. Similar visible widths do not establish identical installation requirements.

Specify joinery as a complete assembly

Distinguish the board core, decorative finish, edge, hardware, worktop and accessories. Review each for its location, exposure, fixing and care. A label such as MDF or laminate does not establish that the entire cabinet suits the intended moisture conditions, loads or cleaning method. Product information and appropriate details are needed.

  • Cabinets: dimensions, divisions, shelves, drawers, backs and plinths.
  • Fronts: product, colour, sheen, grain direction and edges.
  • Hardware: model, operation, loads, adjustment and maintenance access.
  • Surfaces: product, thickness, finish, cut-outs, joints and support.
  • Installation: actual walls, fixings, tolerances and service interfaces.

Approve manufacturing drawings and samples before ordering. Review associated components when substituting a material or appliance rather than assuming every replacement is equivalent.

Design wardrobes from their contents

Separate long and short hanging clothes, shoes, bags, linen and seasonal items. Position frequently used contents for the actual user, then determine shelves, drawers and hanging arrangements. Check doors against the bed and passage; with sliding fronts, review which internal sections can be reached at one time.

Coordinate internal lighting with components and access to the power supply. Review tall-unit fixings against the actual wall with the relevant specialist. For separate upholstered furniture, agree the fabric, filling, dimensions and care through appropriate samples so it complements the joinery without assuming identical materials.

Resolve bathroom fittings before the finishes

Set the positions of sanitaryware, mixers, equipment and access openings. Coordinate levels, drainage, waterproofing, lighting and ventilation with the responsible disciplines. A concealed mixer needs its installation depth and service access checked before closing the wall. Define the relevant system tests for the project and selected products.

Stone identity also matters. The Natural Stone Institute links care to composition; some natural stones are sensitive to acids.

Compare floor, wall finish, tapware and cabinetry samples together. Assess wet-area floor suitability against the product and system information. A photograph of a polished surface does not establish its safety or maintenance performance.

Compare quotations using the same information

Issue the same layout and component schedule to each quotation. A linear metre of wall cabinets differs from a tall appliance unit with drawers; a worktop with complex openings differs from a simple run. Define the measurement basis and inclusions, separating appliances, service work and preparation where appropriate.

Review supply, installation, protection, cleaning, currency, relevant taxes and validity. Agree responsibility for final measurements, approvals and changes, together with appliance delivery dates. Budget alternatives need clear specifications and samples rather than a general promised saving or assumed manufacturing period.

Inspect operation as well as appearance

Compare installed units with the drawings and samples. Operate every door, drawer and mechanism; inspect edges, joints and worktop-to-wall interfaces. Confirm maintenance access and specialist testing of the fittings. Reconcile accessories and obtain care, adjustment and agreed warranty information, with an outstanding-items list to close.
