Modern Turkish-style curtains can combine a light sheer with side drapes, a simple single fabric layer or a room-darkening system suited to the space. Start with daylight, privacy and window operation, then choose fabric, headings and tracks. A Turkish label alone does not define one style or establish product quality; request the actual sample and specification.
Give each layer a defined purpose
In Turkish curtain terminology, tül usually refers to the light sheer layer and fon to the heavier or decorative side drape. Confirm what the supplier means and review the real fabric, since commercial terms vary. Decide what each layer needs to do before choosing its colour.
IKEA distinguishes sheer, light-filtering, room-darkening and blackout products. Test the actual system for privacy and light control. Dark colour or a heavy appearance alone does not establish complete blackout, and a sheer should not be assumed to provide night-time privacy.
Modern arrangements and what to review
| Arrangement | Possible purpose | Review before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Sheer plus plain drapes | Different daytime and closed-layer settings | Track count, layer overlap and stacked fabric |
| Regular wave-style folds | A quiet continuous line on a compatible track | Fabric, heading tape and carrier compatibility |
| Sewn pleats or eyelets | A defined heading or visible decorative pole | Heading shape, movement and drop reference |
| One fabric layer | A simpler solution where the sample meets the brief | Transmission, privacy and closing arrangement |
| Curtain with an independent roller blind | Separate decoration from additional light control | Clearances, interference and access to each system |
These are design options, not a verified sales or trend ranking. Review them with the actual ceiling, furniture and windows rather than choosing a curtain in isolation.
A contemporary layered composition
Separate layers let you discuss a daylight position and a more closed setting, with a suitable track for each. In a simple scheme, fabric fall, heading consistency and the hem become more noticeable. A hanging sample or heading mock-up is useful before approving the full order.
Modern and ornate treatments: choose details deliberately
An ornate treatment may include embroidery, a shaped valance and prominent decoration, as in the archive image. For a simpler contemporary room, compare those details with regular folds and plainer fabric. Every feature need not appear on one window, and the image does not represent all curtains sold in Türkiye.
Measure track, fabric and drop separately
Survey the window width and height and the proposed track position, then record where the curtain should finish. Check handles, opening windows, air-conditioning, any radiator and nearby furniture. Use the actual hanging system as the reference rather than a generic photograph.
IKEA’s measuring guide distinguishes the window, track, fabric quantity and drop. Ask the maker to state flat fabric width, finished gathered width and agreed allowances. Quantity changes with the heading, fabric roll width and pattern repeat. One fullness multiplier should not be assumed for every product.
Allow a location for the open fabric stack and check door and window movement. An appropriate installer should specify brackets and fixing to suit the system, layer weight and site structure. A suspended ceiling alone is not evidence of a suitable support for every load.
Test privacy and light in the real room
Place the sample at the window and compare the view from both sides under appropriate daytime and evening conditions. Decide whether you need a softened view, stronger screening or a sleeping-room closure. Check meeting edges and side and top gaps in the installation mock-up, not the textile alone.
Keep the fabric and colour references and lining with the approved sample. Do not infer thermal, acoustic or UV performance from thickness or a picture. If the brief requires measured performance, request relevant product data and the test scope before agreeing the specification.
Match the room, care and operation
For living rooms, review the outlook, screen glare and relationship with furniture. For bedrooms, consider the required light control and how the curtain will be operated. In kitchens or bathrooms, assess suitability for the actual exposure, moisture, cleaning and proximity to heat in line with product instructions and specialist review.
Confirm removal, cleaning, rehanging, drying and ironing requirements from the fabric, lining and trim labels. Velvet, linen or polyester describes more than one possible product and finish. If motorisation is desired, establish compatibility, servicing, power supply and alternative operation before installation.
Cords and safe use
The US CPSC warns of child strangulation from window-covering cords and recommends cordless options where young children are present, with beds and climbable furniture away from windows. This is scoped consumer safety guidance, not certification of a pictured system or transfer of US building requirements to another country.
Request an operating demonstration and the product instructions. A motor or a token cord fixing does not establish that the complete system is safe. Review the actual components with the supplier and installer, particularly where children live or visit.
