For a balanced wall behind the bed, start with the bed frame, bedside tables and lighting positions, then choose a clear main treatment: paint, wallpaper, upholstery, timber or decorative mouldings. Assess samples in the room and resolve fixing and cleaning details before installation. A coherent relationship with the furniture matters more than combining every attractive material on one wall.

Measure the room and decide what stays

Record the wall width and height, actual bed-frame dimensions, bedside tables, window, curtains, sockets and switches. Note the proposed lining thickness and whether the headboard belongs to the furniture or fixes to the wall. An added layer can affect bed position or socket access even when the front elevation looks suitable.

Decide which furniture you will retain before choosing the treatment. Set a budget for the wall alone or state whether the bed, bedside tables and electrical work are included. A reference photograph supported by measurements is a more useful brief than asking for an identical look in a different room.

Five treatments and when to consider them

  • Contrasting paint: a straightforward visual change with few added details; inspect the wall and test colour and finish.
  • Wallpaper: adds pattern or texture. Review pattern scale, repeat, seams and product-specific cleaning instructions.
  • Upholstered panel: pairs with a simple bed and offers a defined fabric and colour choice. Check samples, edges, removal and care.
  • Timber panels or slats: introduce rhythm and visible texture. Establish whether the product is solid timber, veneer or a finished board; appearance alone does not establish its specification.
  • Decorative mouldings or geometric divisions: support a classic or restrained composition. Coordinate them with the bed and lights so details do not cut across one another by accident.

Two materials can work together when each has a purpose: a low upholstered headboard, quiet painted area and limited side slats, for example. Avoid assembling a mirror, bold print, shelves, slats and many lights simply because each looks appealing on its own.

Size the treatment around the bed and bedside tables

Compare three arrangements: bed-width treatment, a composition including both bedside tables, or a full-wall finish. Draw them at the same scale and review the ends beside corners, curtains and wardrobes. No single decorative proportion is mandatory for every bedroom.

A hypothetical width check: a 300 cm wall, 180 cm bed frame and two 45 cm bedside tables use 270 cm, leaving 30 cm. This is only a width calculation; it does not establish adequate circulation beside the bed or clearance for drawers. Check the floor plan as well, and confirm that 180 cm is the actual frame width rather than only the mattress size.

Test colour and pattern before ordering

Compare paint, wallpaper, fabric and timber samples with the curtains and bedding in daylight and under evening lighting. Jotun’s colour-sample guidance explains that lighting, finish and substrate affect colour appearance. A screen image alone is therefore insufficient for final selection.

For patterned wallpaper, review a larger repeat rather than only a small swatch. Establish its starting position relative to the bed centreline and examine how the edges will finish. Record fabric and timber sample codes and approved finishes instead of describing the quotation only as “beige” or “wood effect”.

Coordinate reading lights and controls before closing the wall

Try the light from seated and reclining positions. Does it serve reading, shine into the other person’s eyes or leave its switch difficult to reach? Concealed lighting can complement the composition; it does not automatically replace a reading light.

Show sockets, switches and cable routes on the drawing and agree maintenance access with an electrical specialist. SMD’s proposed arrangement keeps crowded shelves and heavy ornaments away from the pillow area, while side features allow drawers and curtains to operate.

Resolve the wall condition and installation details

Graham & Brown’s wallpaper guidance calls for repairing imperfections and making the surface clean, smooth and dry before hanging, with preparation and adhesive appropriate to the product. Do not conceal the cause of damp or peeling behind a new finish.

For panels and upholstery, request fixings appropriate to the wall and weight, together with resolved junctions at the ceiling, floor and sockets. Do not assume that decorative slats provide fire resistance or acoustic absorption: review the specific system’s evidence if the project requires those properties. In rented accommodation, establish landlord consent and removal arrangements, and test adhesive effects on an inconspicuous area.

Quotation and handover checklist

  1. A measured drawing defines width, height, thickness, furniture and electrical positions.
  2. Materials, approved sample codes, finishes and care instructions are stated.
  3. Wall preparation, supply, installation, electrical work and transport are separated in the quotation.
  4. Wallpaper quantities consider roll width and pattern repeat; wall area alone does not establish roll count.
  5. Check alignment, seams, edges, secure fittings, working lights and socket access.
  6. Record outstanding items, responsibility for correction and warranty before final handover.

Editorial review: 17 October 2026. Composition, measurement and handover recommendations are SMD’s; the two manufacturer references concern colour sampling and wallpaper preparation. The image is an illustrative design idea, rather than a record of a completed project.
